It was a traumatic event that drove the situation while the Frankish royal dynasty was being replaced by the Capets in 988, for whom the several houses of the Spanish March felt no bond or fidelity.

They all broke free at some point of the 850-950's, especially after the great raid of Al-Mansur that destroyed most Christian cities in Spain, including Barcelona, after which the Count of Barcelona sent the Frankish king a big "thanks for the help" letter, and decided not to renew the oath of fielty. Pamplona, Aragon, Ribagorza, Urgell, Barcelona, Empúries, etc. The de facto independence of the old Frankish counties in the Spanish March and Gothia. That is, they remain theorically part of France, but they can do as they please. The wars between Flemings and French in the XIIth Century, that the French lost, asserting Flemish status quo. Or we can make a deal with the Turks.īut the very few times some Western duke or count has fought for real independence, no feudal strings attached, it has been because of very traumatic events or because of percieved tyranny and, also, precedent. Even in the Byzantine Empire it was more like "Don't mess with me, but I'm still part of the Empire, because the Empire is a cultural concept more than a political reality, and if there's foreign danger, we're all in danger". This independence thing is something that appears very rarely in Western Europe.
CRUSADER KINGS 2 INDEPENDENCE FACTION INSTALL
No! If something is apparent when you look at medieval history, is that rebel nobles would sooner try to install someone else as king rather than break apart and become a weaker polity in danger, instead of part of a stronger body.Īnd if something's clear, is that in court, everyone's trying to get the king's attention, and if they're not, either they have other things to do, or they are not interested at all in power(rather, they prefer wealth or knowledge, or jousting and hunting and womanizing), or they are out of favour and try to get someone else in power. Instead, they portray the Medieval world as one where kings are holding their vassals in against their will, and have to make them happy in order to prevent them form falling apart. The game does little to portray the game of favours and prizes that exist to those that hold the sovereign's confidence. By Medieval nobles' logic, being close to a king holds much more advantadge than being an independent smurf, easily predated by bigger bullies. I really don't understand why would they want to be independent.
